Monday, May 31

Highlights:

  • Today in Math, we worked on problem solving using a calendar. 
  • In Language Arts, we continued developing our paragraph writing skills.
  • We were able to go outside and play kickball. We loved having time outside in the beautiful weather!
  • For Social Studies, we talked about the importance of reconciliation. We read a book called "When I was Eight". Ask me what that story was about and some of the feelings people shared when listening to the story.

  • Tomorrow is Bike to School Day. Students are encouraged to bike to school if they can!

Highlights:
  • Today in Math, we learned two new card games to practice adding and subtracting. One was called Gain and Loss and the other was Break the Bank. Ask me how to play! 
  • For Field Study Friday, we did a sensory scavenger hunt. We picked different adjectives such as bumpy, smooth, prickly, and dull. We then went outside to find items in nature. After, we wrote descriptive sentences that included our adjectives.

Highlights:

  • Today in Math we did a fun measuring activity where we measured our feet and then estimated how many feet it would take to get to a certain place in our school. We then found the actual and were surprised how long certain things were!


  • Today in Word Work we talked about different word endings. We learned that certain endings mean that something happened in the past, some mean they happen in the present, and some mean there are more than one. Ask me what the endings are.
  • In Science, we did a sink and float activity. We tested different things around the room at to see if they would float or sink in water.

Highlights:

  • Today in PE we played a new game called Gaga Ball. Ask me how to play!
  • In Math, we continued with our measurement unit. We measured and compared different items around the room. 
  • For Social Studies, we talked about how transportation has changed over time. We designed our very own future cars with the features we would like to have in them.
  • In Literacy, we worked on writing descriptive sentences about someone that we care about. We are working on making sure that our sentences have connected ideas and proper conventions.

Highlights:

  • Today in PE, we played kickball.
  • In Science, we have started our Boats and Buoyancy unit. We did a fun demonstration about water density. Ask me what happened to the egg when we put it in different kinds of water. 
  • For Art, we have started to learn how to finger knit. It is tricky but the more we practiced the better we became at it!
  • For Literacy, we practiced writing a 5 finger paragraph about our favourite snack.
  • In Social Studies we learned about what school was like in the past. 

Reminders:

  • Tomorrow is Backwards Day! Students are welcome to participate in this spirit day. One suggestion is to wear your clothes backwards!

Highlights:
  • Today we continued learning about nonstandard measurement. We practiced submitting work on Google Classroom.
  • In Literacy, we started to write our final drafts of our fractured fairytales.
  • For PE, we played a fun racket game that practiced our underhand swing and aim.
  • In Social Studies, we talked about the terms that represent past, present, and future
Reminders:
  • Tomorrow is our first day of online learning. Students were sent home with their Google Account information. Students are to login to our first Google Meet tomorrow at 11:30am. Please use the code NLSElagoHansen. I look forward to seeing everyone online tomorrow.
  • I will be sending out an email by 4pm tomorrow with further details about our online learning schedule for the upcoming two weeks.

Highlights:

  • Today in Science, we did a fun experiment with jello. We were able to see the 3 different states of matter.
  • We practiced using Google Classroom to prepare ourselves for our online learning. 
  • In Math, we have started to learn about measurement. We worked on measuring items using nonstandard measurements.
  • For Literacy, we started our brainstorming for the end of our fairytales.
  • We went outside for PE and played kickball. The students have started to get the hang of the rules and had a lot of fun playing!

  • Tonight is the virtual magic show for the families that purchased tickets. Hope you enjoy the show!

Highlights:
  • In Health, we did our Amazing Race Challenges. Ask me what we did.
  • We read a fun story about the Earth. 
  • Today in PE we were practicing how to use tennis racquets and balancing bean bags.
  • For Science we talked about the 3 states of matter. Two of them are solids and liquids. Ask me what the third one is.
  • In Literacy, we started to brainstorm the endings for our fractured fairytales. 
Reminders:
  • Tomorrow is Hats on for Mental Health. Students are encouraged to wear a hat to school.
  • Tomorrow is the the Virtual Magic Show. It will begin at 6:00pm.

Highlights:

  • In Math, we did a scavenger hunt around the classroom. We had to solve addition and subtraction equations and then determine if the sums were equal or not equal.
  • Today in Literacy, we began to write the middles of our fractured fairy tales.
  • In Social Studies, we started to learn about important people of the past and how they impacted different communities.
  • For PE, we learned to play kickball on the baseball field. It was fun learning to play a new game.
  • In the afternoon, we had a practice lockdown. The students did a wonderful job on this drill!

Reminders:

  • Wednesday is Hats on for Mental Health Day. Students are encouraged to wear any kind of hat to school!
