Friday, Feb. 26

Highlights:

  • Today in Science we learned about burning and melting. We also talked about how this change form when we cook.
  • In Math, we continued practicing open number line subtraction. We also practiced solving equations when they are stacked on top of each other.
  • For Literacy, we learned about acrostic poems. We wrote ones about winter and also ones about our names.

Reminders:

  • On Monday, we will begin to collect items for the food bank. Students are welcome to bring items if they are able to.

Highlights:

  • Today in Math we continued learning different strategies to solve double digit subtraction equations. We practiced using an open number line to solve equations like 78-45=
  • For Literacy, we learned about haikus. We wrote haikus for the different seasons.
  • In Health, we learned about how we can help our community by donating to the Calgary Food Bank. We talked about the different things that can be donated and the things that can't.

  • 'Lights On' spirit day is tomorrow. Students can wear their NLS gear!

Highlights:

  • Today was Pink Shirt Day! We listened to a story called Kindness is my Superpower during our virtual assembly. 

  • In Social Studies we learned about Ukrainian traditional clothing.
  • For Math, we practiced expanded form subtraction.
  • We did an optical illusion heart art. We talked about where Pink Shirt Day started and things we can do to spread kindness.
Reminders:

  • On Friday we will have "Lights On"spirit day. Students are welcome to wear their NLS gear!
  • Northern Lights Food Drive
    Northern Lights School is going to be collecting food items for the Calgary Food Bank in order to help families in need. From March 1st to 12th, we invite students to bring items such as pasta sauce, uncooked pasta, canned beans, canned vegetables, canned fruit, cereal, canned soup, rice and macaroni and cheese. The food bank also accepts hygiene items such as toothpaste, shampoo, conditioner, as well as diapers and baby food.
     
    Thank you for your support and for helping families in need!

Tuesday, Feb. 23

Highlights:

  • Today in Science, we did an experiment where we observed snow melting and changing form.
  • In PE we played two different dribbling games. We also played a shooting games called Hot Shots.
  • For Literacy, we learned a new poem called a 7 line poem called a diamanté. We wrote poems related to winter.
  • In Math, we practiced subtraction using base 10 blocks. 


Reminders:

  • Pink Shirt Day is tomorrow. If possible, students are asked to wear a pink shirt to school tomorrow to celebrate this day.

Highlights:

  • Today in Math we learned a new game called addition war. Ask me how to play!
  • For Social we learned about different Ukrainian foods.
  • In PE we practiced our passing. We did chests passes and bounce passes.
  • In Art we have started a foil embossing project. We created the outline today using yarn and will complete the next part tomorrow.

  • Pink Shirt Day is on Wednesday. Students are welcome to wear a pink shirt to celebrate this day!
  • On Friday we will have "Lights On"spirit day. Students are welcome to wear there NLS gear!

Highlights:

  • Today in Math, we did a problem solving activity called Leo the Rabbit. Ask me what we had to solve!
  • We had a virtual assembly today. Mrs. Brinson gave us an update on our playground and when we can order NLS shirts and hoodies again. She also read us a story by a Canadian author. 
  • In Literacy, we read The Fire Station by Robert Munsch. We talked about character traits and found examples of things that characters did in the story.

Highlights:

  • During Literacy we read a story called "Sylvester and the Magic Pebble". Ask me to retell the story to you using our 5-finger retell strategy.
  • In Math, we practiced the making 10 strategy for adding 3 different numbers.
  • For Social, we learned about the Ukrainians who lived in Saskatoon. We learned about the  Ukrainian flag and the tradition of dying eggs.

  • Friday is 'Lights On' spirit day. Students are welcome to wear their NLS hoodies and t-shirts or their grade colour. Our colour is yellow!

Highlights:

  • Today in Math, we continued practicing two digit equations without regrouping. We did a dice activity that helped us practice.
  • In PE we practiced our basketball shooting. Ask me what BEEF stands for.
  • For Health, we read a story called My Map Book. We created a visual journal page of our heart map. We drew and wrote the things that make our hearts happy.
  • We watched a performance by the Calgary Philharmonic Orchestra. They did the story of Little Red Riding Hood. Ask me what kinds of instruments they played.
  • In Science, we learned about how to be safe when around hot or cold things. Ask me what is one safety rule for hot and one for cold.

Highlights:

  • In Health, we talked about kindness to help celebrate Random Acts of Kindness week.
  • For Math, we practiced adding two digit numbers by stacking them one of top of the other. We talked about how it's important to start adding with the ones place first then the tens. Ask me to show you to solve 15+24 = 
  • In Literacy, we read The Day the Crayons Quit. We had to come to up with reasons for which crayon we would choose to not quit. We worked on writing convincing reasons!

Highlights:

  • Today in PE we practiced dribbling. We practiced different basketball skills.
  • In Art, we created paper lanterns to celebrate the Lunar New Year. We also learned different facts about the new year and why people celebrate it.
  • For Science, we did two different experiments. Ask me what happened to the glow sticks when we put them in warm and cold water.
  • In Literacy, we did an activity where we used QR codes to learn about the accomplishments of important women from around the world. We presented ideas about who they were and what they did.
  • Today in Math, we continued practicing our open number line addition. We created our own equations that we solved.

Highlights:

  • Today in Literacy, we learned about Rosa Parks. Ask me why she is an important person.
  • We made Valentine's Day cards for someone that we love!
  • For Math, we continued with open number lines and did some esti-mysteries. 
  • In PE we continued practicing our dribbling skills in basketball. We also had time to practice shooting.

Highlights:

  • Today in Math, we practiced adding numbers on an open number line.
  • In Science, we learned about temperature and thermometers.
  • For Word Work, we read a story called "How to Put an Octopus to Bed". It had different rhyming words. We practiced coming up with rhyming words for different word families.
  • In Literacy, we learned about Viola Desmond. Ask me why she is important.

  • There is no school on Thursday or Friday.
  • Monday is the Family Day holiday so there is no school.

Highlights:

  • Today in Social Studies, we read a story called Fiddles and Spoons. It talked about the Acadian people who lived in Nova Scotia.
  • In Literacy, we read a book called "The Undefeated". It featured many important people that are celebrated during Black History Month. We did a picture walk and shared the things we saw and thought about when looking at the pictures.
  • For Math, we continued practiced the addition strategy of using expanded form and base 10 pictures to solve equations.

Highlights:

  • Today in Science we looked and compared different things use the words hotter than and colder than. Ask me one is one things that is colder than ice and one this that is hotter than soup.
  • In Math, we learned how to do addition using expanded form. 
  • Today was Toque Day, we wore toques raise awareness for the homeless.
  • In Social Studies we wrote about the Acadian flag and the Acadian people. Ask me what language the Acadians speak.

Highlights:

  • Today we went for a short winter walk. We looked for things that rhymed, things that had different syllables and things that started or ended with different letters. We had fun playing in the fresh snow too!


  • For Word Work we talked about word families. 
  • In Math we practiced adding numbers together by drawing base 10 pictures.
  • We listened to a story called When We Are Kind. We watched it read aloud live by Chief Superintendent Christopher Usih. It is World Read Aloud day so this was a fun way to celebrate it!

Highlights:

  • In Math today we practiced Making 10. We used this strategy to solve different addition problems. We also saw that this strategy can help us add numbers quicker.
  • Today was Groundhog Day! We looked at different types of text to gather information. Ask me one thing I learned about Groundhog Day.
  • In Science, we started our Hot and Cold temperature unit. We listed different things in the world that are hot and cold.
  • For PE we practiced throwing and catching while in motion. 

Reminders:

  • Reports cards are available to be viewed online though your Parent PowerSchool account today.
  • Tomorrow is Winter Walk Day. Students are reminded to dress for the weather. Please make sure they have proper footwear, a winter coat, snow pants, gloves or mittens, a hat or toque as we will be going on a short community walk. 
  • Toque Day is on Feb. 4.

Highlights:

  • In Art we created winter trees using oil pastel and water colours. We used the crayon resist method to create our pictures.
  • We welcomed two new students into our class today! We are excited to have them.
  • For Literacy, we did some writing about thick and thin questions. Ask me what the difference is between the two types of questions.
  • In Math, we used base 10 blocks and learned how to add numbers together.
