Wednesday, Mar. 24

Highlights:
  • In Math, we reviewed how to use the algorithm method to solve subtraction equations that don't include regrouping.
  • For Literacy, we did an opinion writing activity where we choose a pet and had to write a letter to our families convincing them to get that pet. 
  • In Science, today was our final day of our hot and cold temperature unit. We tested our insulation devices that we created to see if they could prevent an ice cube from melting. Ask me how my device did!
Reminders:
  • There is no school tomorrow as it is parent teacher conferences.
  • Friday is a PD day, so there is no school.
  • Spring Break begins March 29 and school resumes on April 6.

Highlights:

  • Today in Math, we used the number line strategy to solve subtraction equations.
  • For Literacy, we continued with our opinion writing. We learned about the importance of adding supporting details and reasons. 
  • In Science, we built our insulation devices. Tomorrow we will be testing to see if they will keep an ice cube from melting. See some of our device inventions below!




Reminders:

  • Tomorrow is PJ Day. Students are welcome to come dressed in their pj's. Please leave all stuffed animals and toys at home. 
  • Parent Teacher Conferences are on Thursday.
  • Students have no school Thursday and Friday. Spring Break is from March 29 - April 5. School will resume on April 6.

Highlights:

  • Today we had a fire drill! We did a great job getting out quickly and safely.
  • We continued working on opinion writing and wrote about how to convince our families to go to the restaurant of our choice.
  • In Social Studies, we created the final side for our trioramas. We made the traditional clothing of our chosen community.
  • For PE, we continued with our volleyball skills of bumping and setting to a partner.

  • Wednesday is PJ day.
  • Parent Teacher Conferences are on Thursday, please make sure you have signed up for one.
  • There is no school for students on Thursday and Friday.

Back by popular demand! We are selling a second round of Northern Lights School Spirit T-Shirts and Hoodies in the colours of the Northern Lights that will have our BLACK Northern Lights School Bison logo on the front. 

This opportunity will allow families that didn’t order in December a chance to order, or for families to order additional colours.  Each Friday, we have our ‘Lights On’ Spirit Wear days where staff and students wear their school t-shirts or hoodies to promote school spirit. 


$15 school spirit t-shirts in youth and adult sizes and $25 hoodies in youth and adult sizes will be sold between now and April 12. The online order form must be filled in by 9:00 pm on Monday, April 12.  Orders should be delivered by approximately April 30, 2021.  




All payments are to be made within your Parent PowerSchool Account after filling in the online order form.


Within the online order form, you will indicate your OLDEST student’s full name, their homeroom teacher, and the total amount that you have paid through your Parent PowerSchool account. You will also indicate the size and colour you would like.  If the first choice colour is out of stock, we will call you so you can select a second choice colour.

Highlights:

  • Today we had a virtual smudge led by Mr. Scout. This was a great way to start off our Field Study Friday. We made an offering to nature after choosing our special spot. We look forward to future Field Study Friday. 
  • In Art, we create a Math art using geometric and organic shapes. We will add the finishing touches next week.
  • For Math, we continued working on our addition Math strategies.

Highlights:

  • Today in Science we learned about all the different ways animals adapt to insulate themselves. We learned that some animals have feathers, fur, wool, and blubber to keep them warm. We did a very fun experiment where we got to test out how "blubber" keeps animals such as whales and polar bears keep warm. 


  • In Literacy we practiced using the boxes and bullets strategy for non-fiction books. We read a non-fiction text and discussed how we find out the main idea and what sort of supporting details we could use to help our understanding.
  • We also did a fun Math scavenger hunt using different clues about the school. 
  • Today we also did a fun activity where we drew and wrote about ourselves at 7 years old and again at 100 years old.

Highlights:

  • Today in Word Work we learned about the Long O sound. Ask me at word that has this sound.
  • In Social Studies, we talked about Inuit traditions.
  • For Math, we played different Math games like addition yahtzee.
  • In Literacy, we did a scavenger hunt for St. Patrick's Day. We also wrote about what we would do if we found a pot of gold at the end of a rainbow.

Highlights:
  • Today in Math we practiced drawing our base 10 equations when solving subtraction problems.
  • We did opinion writing in Literacy.
  • For Science, we conducted an experiment to see which material was the best insulator. Ask me what material kept ice cube the largest.
  • In Health, we learned about our fantastic, elastic brain. Ask me what it means to "flip our lid".

  • Tomorrow for St. Patrick's Day, students are welcome to wear green.
  • We are collecting materials for a Science building project that we will be doing next week. We ask that materials be sent to the school by Friday so that they can be quarantined.

Highlights:
  • In Social Studies, we continued with our triorama projects. We created the section that shows the activities that could be done when someone visits the communities we are learning about. 
  • For Math we have started to learn about subtraction strategies we can use to solve equations. We used our Base 10 blocks to show our understanding.
  • For Literacy, we did our last friendly letter on a topic of our choice. We reviewed the different parts and made sure to include them.
  • In PE we have started our volleyball unit.
  • Today was also the first day of our Numeracy Week. We had some very creative shirts for our Wear a Number day!

  • Today is the last day to place your orders for the Cobs Bread hot cross buns.

Highlights:

  • Today was the last day of Drum Fit in PE. We got to select the different songs that we danced to.
  • In Word Work, we reviewed the Long A sound. Ask me what is one word that has a long a sound.
  • For Science, we did an experiment about insulators. Ask me what kind of cup kept the water hot the best.


  • In Math, we reviewed all the different addition strategies that we have been practicing. 
  • Today was also Drop Everything and Dance. It was so much fun to dance throughout the day and move our bodies!

  • No school tomorrow!
  • Monday is Wear a Number Day. Students can wear any clothing with numbers, like jerseys, or they can decorate their shirts or hats or make a headband with numbers on them.

Highlights:

  • In Social Studies, we have started a triorama project for one of our communities. We built the landscapes and added the natural resources. 



  • For Science, we talked about the differences between boilers and furnaces. We also learned about solar energy.
  • In Math, we continued to practice the 'Give and Take' strategy for adding two digit numbers.
  • For Literacy, we wrote a friendly letter to a friend. We are practicing writing our letters using the proper format.

Highlights:
  • Today in Science we started to learn about how buildings are heated. We learned that many homes are heated through a furnace and that big buildings like our school are heated with boilers. Mr. Scout took us on a small tour of our a mechanical room to show us the boilers that heat up NLS. It was so much fun to see them!
  • In Math, we learned about the give and take strategy for adding numbers together. It is a strategy that connects with the friendly numbers of ten. Ask me what is one friendly number.
  • For Literacy, we started to write a friendly letter about one of the communities we are studying in Social Studies. We wrote about the landmarks, food, and activities we could do.

Highlights:

  • In Math we practiced using the algorithm to solve addition equations.
  • Today in Literacy, we worked on writing a friendly letter where we had to convince someone of a pet that we want. 
  • For Social, we learned about the natural resources that are found in Iqaluit. Ask me what one of them are!
  • In Health, we created food bingo cards from the different food groups.

Highlights:

  • Today in art we did an oil pastel picture inspired by Vincent Van Gogh's "Wheatfield with Crows". We connected this picture to the community of Saskatoon. Below are some examples of our work!


  • Today in Literacy, we did our good copies of our friendly letters for the kindergartens.
  • In Math, we did a mystery number for our warm up and then practiced addition regrouping.

Highlights:

  • In Literacy, we read a story called Finding Winnie. Ask me what the story was about and one important detail from it. We practiced retelling a non-fiction story.
  • For Science we talked about how we adjust temperatures in our home. We brainstormed different ways we can heat or cool down our houses.
  • In Math we practiced using the base 10 strategy for solving equations with regrouping. We drew picture models to show our understanding.

  • Tomorrow is our NLS 'Lights On' spirit day. Students are welcome to wear their NLS gear!

Highlights:

  • Today in Math, we reviewed how to add double digit equations that don't involve regrouping. We started to learn about how to add double digit numbers with regrouping using our base ten blocks.
  • In Literacy, we learned more about the different parts of a friendly letter. We did a sorting activity using different examples.
  • For Science, we learned about body temperature and how a rise or fall from the normal could mean we are sick. Ask me what one of the four things are that can affect our body temperature in a day. 
  • We continued doing Drum Fit in PE. It was fun!

Highlights:
  • Today in PE we started our dance unit. We are beginning the unit by doing some Drum Fit! Ask me what activities we did!



  • In Math we learned a new dice game that practiced our adding and doubles face. Ask me how to play!
  • For Social Studies, we talked about natural resources in Canada. Ask me for some examples.
  • In Literacy, we wrote a friendly letter to a kindergarten student. We practiced how to do a greeting and write a body.

Hello Northern Lights School Families,


We are creating a yearbook this year to commemorate our first year as a new school community!  All classes, including Hub classes, will have a page with their individual portraits and many memory photos of activities they did as a class.  Other pages will include construction photos, teaching and support staff photos, Spirit Wear photos, and many other photos marking special events, whole school events, or other memories captured throughout the year.  


Books will be distributed to those who order at the start of the next school year to allow us as much time as possible to gather important moments up until the end of June.

Highlights:

  • Today in Math we started learning about regrouping when completing addition equations.
  • In Social Studies, we learned about natural resources.
  • For Literacy, we have started a new unit on friendly letters. We talked about what the different parts of a friendly letter are and the things we find in them.
  • In PE we played bench ball.

Northern Lights Food Drive

  • Northern Lights School is going to be collecting food items for the Calgary Food Bank in order to help families in need. From March 1st to 12th, we invite students to bring items such as pasta sauce, uncooked pasta, canned beans, canned vegetables, canned fruit, cereal, canned soup, rice and macaroni and cheese. The food bank also accepts hygiene items such as toothpaste, shampoo, conditioner, as well as diapers and baby food.
