Thursday, Oct. 29

Highlights:

Today we did a lot of exploring and learning through pumpkins! We had so many great costumes and outfits today at our school. Thank you to everyone who participated in this fun spirit day! 

  • In Math today we learned about estimation. Ask me what estimations are. We got to estimate how tall, how heavy, and how wide different pumpkins were. We use scales to figure out how heavy a pumpkin was. 
  • Today some students will begin to bring home a skip counting puzzle they created! Please try and solve their puzzles. 


  • In Language Arts, we rolled to create a monster! We then wrote about our monster. Ask me something about my monster.

  • For Science, we had to be scientists and label the different parts of a pumpkin. I can tell you at least 3 parts of a pumpkin. We got to feel the inside of the pumpkin and described how it felt.

  • There is no school tomorrow. I hope everyone has a safe Halloween weekend!

Highlights:

  • Today in Lively Letters we did 'l' and 'r'. Ask me to show you the actions for these sounds!
  • In Language Arts we practiced stretching out our sentences using the questions; who, what, where, when and why. I can give you an example of a sentence that answers all those questions!
  • We did some Math and Literacy learning centres. We built words with Lego and did skip counting puzzles. 
  • In Social Studies, we were learning about Iqaluit and watched a video that showed what it looks like when you land from an airplane. Ask me why the houses are colourful.  

Reminders:

  • Tomorrow students are welcome to wear Black and Orange or a costume to school if they wish. Reminder that costumes should not interfere with learning, costume accessories are to stay home and students are not to wear full face costumes or anything on their face that interferes with their protective mask. 
  • There is no school on Friday.

Highlights:
  • Today we watch a video about butterflies. We learned about the life cycle. Ask me what the life cycle of a butterfly is.
  • We read a book called "The Fierce Yellow Pumpkin".
  • In Math, we looked at 3D shapes in our world. I can tell you an example things in the world that are cylinders, spheres, cones, cubes, pyramids and rectangular prisms!
  • We did a visualization activity for the story called "The Purple Kangaroo". Ask me what the story was about!
Reminders:
  • Students are welcome to wear Black and Orange or a costume on Thursday, if they would like.
  • There is no school on Friday.

Highlights:

  • Today in Math we sorted 2D and 3D shapes using different rules.
  • In P.E. we played a game called Shark Attack.
  • During Language Arts, we continued working on our Mo Willems books. We added talking and thinking bubbles 
  • In Social Studies we did a landform sort for each community.

Reminders:

  • Tomorrow is the last day to send in pictures of your pumpkins to Mrs. Brinson.
  • Thursday is Black and Orange Day/Costume Spirit Day. Please refer to the Northern Lights News emailed on Friday for further details. 
  • No school on Friday.

Highlights:
  • Today we did a new Lively Letters sound. It was the 'ng'. Ask me some words that have this sound!
  • We also went outside and explored what things in the world we could find that start or end with certain sounds.
  • In Math, we practiced counting backwards by 2's, 5's, and 10's.

Highlights:

  • In P.E. we did a mini soccer game and played Stinky Armpits again!
  • Today in Science, we drew a spider and labelled the different parts. Ask me how many body parts a spider has.
  • We did a guided drawing of a robin.
  • In Math we practiced counting by 10's starting at 8. We also counted by 2's starting at a different number besides 2.
  • In Language Arts, we worked on our storyboard for our Mo Willems book. Ask me what my story is about!

  • If your child has not accepted the invitation for Google Classroom, please do so as soon as possible. If you require any help doing this please send me an email.

Highlights:

  • Today in Music we did Freeze Dance.
  • In P.E. we played Four Corners and a game called Stinky Armpits. Ask me how to play this game!
  • For Math, we practiced counting by 10's starting at any number from 1-9. I can show you one of the ways we counted by. 
  • In Social Studies, we learned about the climate and weather in the communities. We looked at the temperature in each community. Ask me what the warmest and coldest community was today!

  • Students that have not returned the blue digital citizenship form sent out last week are reminded to please return them as soon as possible.

Highlights:

  • Today we had our first lockdown practice! Our class did an AMAZING job during this drill.
  • In P.E. we played mini soccer games using all the different skills we have learned.
  • Today in Language Arts, we practiced reading some of our sight words. We created our words using Play Doh.

  • In Math, we did a Number Talk and listened to clues and did a 100's Chart Hunt.
  • We did a visualization activity where we read a poem "Green Giant". Ask me what the poem was about!

  • Tomorrow is Picture Day! Don't forget to bring your beautiful smiles!

NORTHERN LIGHTS SCHOOL ‘VIRTUAL PUMPKIN PATCH’ 
  • Families from Coventry Hills School have participated in their annual ‘Pumpkinella’ display for many years.  To honour this tradition, but in a way that meets our Covid-19 precautions, we will be coordinating a ‘Virtual Pumpkin Patch’. Families wishing to participate can design, carve, decorate or dress up a pumpkin and send a picture of it to Mrs. Brinson at mlbrinson@cbe.ab.ca by Tuesday, October 27.  We will then put all of the pictures together into an NLS Pumpkin Patch iMovie that teachers can show in their classrooms on Thursday, October 29 and that we can send out to families with the Northern Lights News on Friday, October 30.  We hope your family gets together for some family time and joins in the fun!

Highlights:

  • In Social Studies, we learned about the landforms and bodies of water in each community.
  • For Science, we drew a monarch butterfly and a housefly. We labelled the different parts of each. Ask me what is one part of either insect.
  • In Math, we did skip counting on a number line.

  • Students are reminded to dress for the weather.
  • Picture Day is on Wednesday.

 Highlights:

  • Today in Art we created a warm colour tree. We used an art technique called Pointilism. Ask me what the technique is!
  • In Math, we did a Splat! activity and practiced our growing patterns on a 100's chart.
  • In P.E. we practiced our ball skills of throwing and catching.

Highlights:

  • Today was Math Patterns Day! We went on a pattern hunt around the school and found so many patterns. Check out some of them below.



  
 
  • In Music we played Secret Leader. 
  • Today in Social Studies, we learned about the land in the different communities. Ask me what the land is like in the Arctic region, Atlantic region, or Prairie region.
  • We learned more about visualizing today. We read a poem called My Neighbor's Dog is Purple. Ask me what the surprise at the end of the poem was!

  • If you haven't returned the blue forms from Tuesday, please send them back as soon as possible.

Highlights:

  • Today we did two new Lively Letters sounds. We did 'm' and 'n'. Ask me to show you the actions for them!
  • We played 4 corners in the gym and freeze tag!
  • In Math, we practiced looking at growing patterns in numbers. 
  • During Science, we learned at least one fact about amphibians, birds, mammals, and reptiles. Ask me what is one fact that I learned.

Reminders:

  • Tomorrow is Math Patterns Spirit Day. Please wear clothing that has patterns on it! 
  • Please return the blue digital citizenship forms that were sent home yesterday.
APPLE FUNDRAISER WILL HELP BUY MUCH NEEDED PHYS. ED. EQUIPMENT...orders due by midnight this coming Sunday

To help raise funds for much needed PE equipment, we are selling apples this week from Davison Orchard in Vernon, BC. 

15-pound boxes of Ambrosia, Gala, or Okanagan Blend can be purchased through your Parent PowerSchool Account for $28 - $32 per box. (When you place your order there, we will be able to see who ordered which apples, so no form is needed.)  

The school will raise between $9.00 and $13.00 for each box sold.  

Please see the attached flyer for more details.  All orders must be placed by midnight this Sunday, October 18.

Highlights:

  • We had P.E. in the Gym today and we played freeze dance and did relay races.
  • In Social Studies, we looked at the different flags of the communities we are learning about. Ask me one thing that was on a flag and what it means.
  • For Art, we continued working on our pattern pumpkins. 
  • In Music, we learned how to say Northern Lights in Inuktitut.

Reminders:

  • Thursday, Oct.15 will be Math Patterns Spirit Day. Students are invited to wear clothing with a pattern, such as stripes, plaid, checks, herringbone, paisley, repeated patterns or repeating pictures, zigzag, etc. 
  • Please complete and return the blue Digital Citizenship from that was sent home today.

Highlights:

  • In Art, we have started creating a pumpkin picture using different patterns for our backgrounds.
  • During P.E. we practicing dribbling the soccer balls and doing a soft kick to our partners.
  • In Math, we did a Splat! warm up activity. Ask me what it was about. We also played a new game called Race to 100.

  • In Social Studies, we looked at different pictures of the communities we are learning about. We talked about how they are the same and different to our community.

Highlights:

  • Northern Lights School raised $900.95 for the Terry Fox Foundation! Great job everyone!!
  • Today we did the two of the Super Star vowels in Lively Letters. They were 'a' and 'o'. Ask me why we call them Super Stars!
  • In Math we sorted using a venn diagram. We learned that some things can belong to more than one group at a time.
  • We read a book called "My Mouth is a Volcano" and then did a guided drawing for a volcano. Ask me what the important message is in that story.

  • In P.E. we had Mr. Scout teach us today. He practiced soccer skills with us. We did dribbling with our feet!

Highlights:

  • Today we did a Terry Fox drawing. Check out some of the great work we did! We are fantastic artists in Grade 2!



  • We also had our Terry Fox Run! Everyone did a great job running all their laps. Our class raised $47.35 for the Terry Fox foundation. 



  • In Math we played a card game. Ask me how to play the game!

  • If students would like to bring a book from home that they want to read while a school. They are welcome to do that.

Highlights:

  • We had our second fire drill today! The class did an excellent job of leaving the school safely and quietly! We are very proud of ourselves.
  • In P.E. we practiced the route we will do tomorrow for the Terry Fox Run. We played relay games and Mother May I?
  • In Language Arts, we learned about Text to Text connections. Ask me what this kind of connection is!
  • Today in Math, we started to explore a hundreds chart and looked for the patterns in it. 
  • In Music, we learned O Canada in sign language. Ask me to show you one of the signs we learned!

Reminders:

  • Our Terry Fox Run will be tomorrow. Please remember to wear comfortable clothing and shoes for the run! Our last day for Toonies for Terry is also tomorrow.
